The re-engineered generation of 3M's Precision-Shaped Grain technology, purpose-built for fast, cool-running stock removal on stainless steel and other heat-sensitive alloys. This is the disc 3M positions above their own Cubitron II 987C, and the numbers back it up: up to 56% more total material removed compared to the 3M Cubitron II Fibre Disc 987C, 36+, with up to 53% faster initial cut rate and up to 43% faster sustained cut rate over the same benchmark.

Why Precision-Shaped Grain matters:

Conventional abrasive grain fractures randomly as it wears, which is why cheaper discs slow down and dull unevenly partway through their life. 3M's triangular ceramic grain is engineered to fracture in a controlled way instead, continuously exposing new sharp cutting points rather than going blunt. The result is a disc that cuts at close to its original rate from first use through to last, rather than tailing off halfway through the pack.

Built for stainless and heat-sensitive alloys:

A grinding aid requires less pressure to use, enabling predictable wear while helping to reduce metal discoloration and the risk of stress cracks on heat-sensitive alloys, such as stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. That matters directly to weld dressing work: overheating stainless during grinding causes visible bluing and can introduce stress cracking at the microstructure level, so a disc that stays cooler under load protects both the finish and the integrity of the weld.

Heavy-duty construction:

A stiff fibre backing and strong resin bond provide durability and tear resistance for heavy grinding applications, such as medium to high-pressure grinding, weld removal, and beveling, including robotic operations. It's rated for both manual and robotic/automated grinding setups, and can be run wet or dry.
