BOAUR Zirconia Flap Disc | 125mm

A general-purpose zirconia alumina flap disc built for aggressive stock removal and long service life on tougher metals, from mild steel through to stainless and cast iron.

Why zirconia over standard aluminium oxide:

Zirconia alumina is a friable abrasive, meaning the grain is engineered to fracture in a controlled way under grinding pressure. As each grain point dulls, it breaks away cleanly to expose a fresh sharp edge underneath, a self-sharpening effect that keeps the disc cutting at close to full speed for most of its working life rather than tailing off as it wears. That property is also what gives zirconia its heat advantage: because the abrasive keeps re-sharpening instead of rubbing dull against the workpiece, it generates less friction heat, which matters directly on stainless steel where excess heat causes discoloration and can encourage stress cracking. Zirconia grain is generally rated to outlast standard aluminium oxide by a meaningful margin under heavy-duty use, which is the trade-off tradesmen are paying the higher price for.

Flap construction advantage:

The overlapping flap design (rather than a single bonded abrasive surface) means the disc contours to curved or uneven surfaces instead of gouging flat, which is useful for blending weld seams, deburring, and rust or coating removal on profiles that aren't perfectly flat. As the outer flaps wear down, fresh abrasive is continuously exposed underneath, which is a different life-extension mechanism to the grain-fracturing behaviour above, both work together on a flap disc.

Typical applications: weld blending and seam smoothing, deburring, rust and coating removal, and general stock removal on mild steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and cast iron.
