Why 316LSi:
The "L" designates extra-low carbon (0.03% max), which matters because standard 316 wire can suffer carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, a condition that leaves the heat-affected zone vulnerable to intergranular corrosion down the track. Dropping the carbon content avoids that risk entirely, which is why 316LSi is the standard choice rather than plain 316 for anything welded rather than just fabricated. The added silicon (the "Si") does the practical work at the torch: it increases weld pool fluidity and wetting action, giving a smoother, brighter bead with less undercut and less post-weld cleanup, particularly useful on thinner gauge sheet.
The molybdenum content (2-3%) is what separates 316LSi from 308L or 309L wire, giving it meaningfully better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, which is why it's the default for marine fittings, food and beverage processing equipment, chemical plant, and anything that sees saltwater or acidic exposure.

Consistent wire diameter and a clean, oxide-free surface finish matter more on pulse TIG than on standard DC TIG, since pulse machines are cycling current at set frequencies and any variation in wire feed shows up as inconsistent penetration or bead ripple.
