In our own testing, this regulator cut gas usage by between 30% and 50% compared to a standard single-stage regulator, with the higher savings seen on tack welding work and the lower end on longer, continuous full welds.

How the dual stage design saves gas: A single-stage regulator reduces cylinder pressure to working pressure in one step, which means the outlet flow drifts as the cylinder empties, forcing you to keep re-adjusting the knob throughout the day. Every one of those readjustments means either underfeeding the arc (leading to poor shielding and wasted, reworked welds) or overfeeding it (blowing excess argon straight out the torch). This regulator's two-stage mechanism reduces pressure in two separate steps, holding outlet flow rock steady from a full cylinder right down to empty. How the built-in surge protector saves gas: Opening a cylinder valve too quickly sends a sudden pressure spike through the regulator.
